st ignatius
spacer The Road of St. Ignatius of Loyola

Your pilgrimage of this hermit, priest, theologian and founder of the Order of the Jesuits and Saint, starts in Barcelona, where you will attend Mass in two important Basilicas. The Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar where Saint Ignatius used to beg for alms, and La Sagrada Familia now Barcelona’s landmark.

Then join the many pilgrims that have been coming for over 700 years to Montserrat, a Benedictine Monastery perched high on a mountain top. It was here in 1522 where Saint Ignatius was inspired by the famed Black Madonna to lay down his sword and exchange his fancy gear for the rags of a beggar, after experiencing a vision of the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus at the shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat.

Your next stop will be Manresa where you will hear mass in the same place where Saint Ignatius received his greatest vision on the banks of the Cardoner River. Then continue to picturesque Huesca and visit the Monastery of San Juan de la Peña.

En route to Pamplona visit the site where his conversion to Christianity began in 1521.  Here is where he received a life changing wound defending the Spanish border against the French artillery that was to plague him the rest of his life. From Pamplona you will also visit the Xavier Castle, home of Francis Xavier, situated between the regions of Navarre and Aragon.

Your next stop is Aranzazu, where you will visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Aranzazu in Onate. Here you can attend Mass at the very same sacred place where Saint Ignatius prayed for the strength to overcome his temptations.

Your last pilgrimage stop is the Saint Ignatius Loyola Sanctuary in the northern Basque Region. You will visit the tower home where was born Iñigo Lopez de Loyola Oñaz in 1491, later to become Saint Ignatius of Loyola. The home is next to the Basilica part of the Sanctuary of Loyola and Shrine to our Lady of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. You tour will end in the beautiful resort town of San Sebastian by the Sea or in the vibrant city of Bilbao.
